  • Magnesium dihydroxide (MDH) is one of the most effective and safe flame retardants.
In spite of the merits, use of MDH was limited due to its vulnerability to hydrolysis, particularly when mixed with polyester. Starting with "brushy" idea created from TRIZ application, I successfully developed hybrid nanocomposites by ATRP in professor Krzysztof Matyjaszewski's lab at Carnegie Mellon University. Polymer chains, grown from surface-modified MDH particles, avoid hydrolysis and maxmize compatibility with polyester. I also utilized the technology for making subway materials.
